Solar Showplace
With the cost of electricity and natural gas rising at a brisk pace (even before the most recent spikes) there is a growing interest in buildings that turn to the sun and wind for comfort. This interest includes both building surface energy concerns and opportunities as well as equipment for the collection of solar for electrical storage and use. For this project I have designed a urban office building with solar equipment showroom for a company that consults in building enclosure design and photovoltaic installation. The client for this project has purchased a site just off the square in downtown Springfield Missouri. The site, 324 N. Booneville directly south of Physique Fitness, was specifically selected as an infill location that shares a north wall with the adjoining buildings on the block. Of the three remaining faces two are primary for marketing and provide the opportunity to showcase enclosure for the control and use of passive solar for comfort and heating as well as operable fenestration or enclosure for passive cooling. An adjacent site level yard and the roof are envisioned as photovoltaic showrooms for equipment and systems.
